Description
The Magha (wealth, power, reward) gets its name from its symbol, the royal throne, and even in the west its corresponding star is Regulus, the star of royalty. The deities of this mansion are the Pitris, the spirits of forefathers who have yet to undergo reincarnation, and this is why this mansion is associated with everything related to heritage, dynasties, nobility and titles inherited from generation to generation.
In the mythological story of Karna, one of the heroes of the Mahabharata, it is told that when he died and went to the afterlife, he received gold and jewelry on his plate instead of food. When he asked why, he was told that all his life he gave gold and jewelry as charity to the poor, yet because he was adopted he never offered food sacrifices to his ancestors and hence must stay hungry as well. Moreover, because he was adopted he was part of the laborers caste, even though in reality he was the legitimate heir to the throne. This mythological parable emphasizes the connection of this mansion to rituals and offerings for the dead and to the preservation of the family legacy. A great example of this mansion’s symbolism can be found in the chart of Alexander III of Macedon (Alexander the Great), who had the Sun, Venus and Ketu in this mansion. However, the legacy this mansion represents doesn’t have to be familial, as can be seen in the chart of Yogananda, who had both his moon and his ascendant in this mansion, and whose legacy was bringing yoga to the west.
