Description

The Shravana (ear) lunar mansion has a somewhat confusing symbolism as its first symbol, the ear that listens to every bit of knowledge and to the hearts of others, doesn’t mesh at first with the second symbol, the three steps of journeys and progress. The same problem occurs with the two deities of this mansion, the first being Vishnu the preserver of the universe while the second, Saraswati, is the goddess of wisdom, knowledge and skill and often acts as a muse that inspires both poetry and invention.

Unlike Vishakha, whose dual symbolism indicates a split, in Shravana it represents elements which are complementary. In the mythological story, all of the avatars of Vishnu were either animals or skilled warriors who killed their opponents, aside from the one in which he took the form of a beggar dwarf named Trivicrama. Unlike the rest of Vishnu’s opponents, the demon Bali who conquered the world was a fair, just and generous ruler who didn’t deserve to die. Hence instead of killing him, Vishnu came to him as a Brahmin (priestly) dwarf with the request that Bali grant him three steps worth of soil as alms. The demon who was known for his generosity promptly agreed offering even more, at which point the dwarf became a giant whose steps covered the entire world.

Famous people with Shravana prominent in their charts: Mozart (Sun, Mercury and Saturn), George Clooney (Moon and Jupiter), Thomas Jefferson and Carolus Linnaeus (Moon), Washington and Franklin (Mercury), Larry King (Saturn), Hugh Hefner (Mars), Chuck Norris (Venus), Eisenhower and Princess Diana (Jupiter), De Gaulle (Mars and Jupiter), Julian Assange (Rahu) and Charles Manson (Rahu and Moon).

Description

The Dhanishta (most wealthy\famous\successful) lunar mansion gets its name from its deities the Vasus, the 8 gods of plenty and prosperity. The symbol of this mansion is the drum, which signifies the drumroll before the unveil, the musical drum leading the steps of the dance, as well as the battle drum dictating the rhythm of the march. In the Mahabharata one of the 8 Vasus, Dyaus, the sky god, the Hindu version of Uranus and Tengri and the origins of the names Jupiter and Zeus, was trapped as the result of a curse in the body of a man named Devavrata (god’s boon).

Despite being smart, learned and an undefeated warrior, his life was full of tragedies. In his youth he was forced to take the vow of celibacy and swear to always serve the ruler of the Kuru kingdom, hence he became known as Bhishma – He of the terrible oath. Later on that oath left him helpless when he witnessed the injustice towards the Pandavas and eventually he was even forced to face them on the battlefield. Even his death was as tragic as his life, coming at a very old age and after many hardships from the arrows of his beloved grandnephew Arjuna.

Just as in the mythological story, this mansion is often seen in the charts of people who rose to the very top yet found a tragic end, such as Marilyn Monroe (Moon and Jupiter), Princess Diana (Moon and Ketu), Elvis Presley (Saturn) and Tupac Shakur (Mars and Rahu). Other natives of this mansion were instead blessed with a very long (although not quiet) life, for example Hugh Hefner, Einstein, Queen Victoria and Fidel Castro (Jupiter), Friedrich the Great (Mercury), Catherine the Great (Rahu) and Queen Elizabeth II (Mars and Jupiter). Other notable examples include Mohammad Ali (Moon and Venus), Michael Jordan (Sun), Chuck Norris (Mercury), Michelle Obama (Moon) and Julian Assange (Mars).
